Description / Review

One half of Drexciya, alongside James Stinson, Gerald Donald’s side project is in some ways the purest depiction of the Electro footprint laid by Juan Atkins with ‘Clear’. There’s also a strong Kraftwerk influence, though chewed up and spit out through the metal machines of Detroit’s Motor City. Cold futurism, androgynous robotic vocals, otherworldly beats. The whole album deserves a full listen but Rocket Scientist has this wonderful panning effect that plays with the inner ear, shifting earthly gravity, allowing the listener to transcend, momentarily, the earthly plain.

Notes

So much in Gerald’s catalogue and the Drexciya catalogue deserves many of its own posts. Another innovator that moved the genre forward in ways that still sound fresh. I was lucky to see Dopplerffekt years ago at the legendary Corsica Studios (RIP). The purity with which they explore their vision is impressive. Most of the best Dopplerffekt tracks are on the compilation Gesamtkunstwerk- Total work of art in German, which it certainly is.
